Liga MX Femenil viewing guide: 2024 Clausura, Semifinals
How to watch those that made it to the next round with some thoughts about those who didn't.
The top four seeds all advanced into the semifinals, with Tigres and Rayadas getting through tough series against Juárez and Pumas respectively while América and Pachuca easily bounced Chivas and León with lopsided scorelines. And before we move on to this week’s matchups, I think it’s worth talking a bit about the projects that are ending and where I think they stand.
For me Juárez gave Tigres fits, and it’s really exciting to see what they’re building there coming to fruition. Losing Jasmine Casarez to injury in the first leg was devastating, but they still gave the reigning champions all they could handle. Pumas was another team that with a few different breaks could have gone on to the next round. Losing Desirée Monsiváis before the start of the series was difficult, even if just for the leadership and veteran presence she brings. I also like the direction this project is heading in.
León is a bit different for me. While I think the project is going in the right direction, I’ve also seen León put together a decent project only to let it fall apart completely the following season and start from scratch. They simply must lock some of the key players in on longer-term contracts and build around them if they’re going to be a team that consistently makes the Liguilla.
Chivas meanwhile needs a lot of work. A team that talented shouldn’t be getting blown out like that in a 4-5 seeding. That it was against América made it that much more egregious. It seemed like this ending however was a foregone conclusion after the club fired head coach Antonio Spinelli two weeks before the start of the Liguilla, which perhaps makes it even more of a bitter pill to swallow. Fans are turning their ire toward Sporting Director Nelly Simón and the front office, who need to come up with a solid path forward for the club before things turn ugly.
Series of the Week
Both of these should be good, but for my money América vs. Tigres will be the better of the two. The rematch of last year’s final will see two of the top teams in the league going against one another. While Tigres bested América in last year’s series, América won the match they played back in Week 14, adding more to what has been one of the better rivalries in league history.
