Liga MX Femenil viewing guide: 2023 Apertura, Week 16
A couple of clásicos as the week kicks off early ahead of the international break.
There are a lot of pretty evenly matched games coming up this week, which starts early because of the international break. And even the games that aren’t as evenly matched will be consequential, with five teams within three points of current eighth seed Juárez. A Pachuca win over Necaxa and a Toluca win over Cruz Azul will clinch Liguilla spots for those teams, while Atlas needs to beat Chivas in the Clásico Jalisco in order to have any hope of staying alive in the Liguilla hunt.
Game of the Week
It has to be the Clásico Regio. Tigres are looking like one of the best teams on the planet right now. Everything is clicking for them, from front to back and everything in between. They are the only unbeaten team. Their 47 goals scored is second best in the league (behind América’s 60), and they’ve allowed just seven in fifteen games. They haven’t conceded a goal in 477 minutes. Maricarmen Reyes is tied with Licha Cervantes for the golden boot with 14 goals, with Jacqueline Ovalle in fourth with eleven. This team is a juggernaut and firing on all cylinders at the moment.
Coming to El Volcán is Rayadas, who have won their last four games and only lost to Chivas this season. This season however seems off for the team, who while they are in fourth place could drop to fifth as Tijuana are one point behind with games against Juárez and Puebla remaining (for comparison, Rayadas just have Tigres and América left). Their +13 goal differential is good, but not what we expect from Rayadas, and the news of Eva Espejo departing after this season started rumors swirling about her future and the future of the club as well.
Still, all of these things go out the window when it’s a rivalry game, especially when it’s one some consider the Clásico Nacional. A win for either team with just one match left in the season could be what pushes the winner on to the Final.
