Liga MX Femenil viewing guide: 2023 Apertura, Week 3
After a wild week full of heavy defeats, this week should be a bit more even-keeled.
Another week with a game postponed, this time it’s Tijuana vs. América being pushed to Tuesday, August 8 apparently because of a Natanael Cano and Junio H concert at Estadio Caliente.
Cool.
The games that will go on should be a little bit more even than the majority of matches from last week, where we saw two-thirds of the games decided by three or more goals. That’s the good news. The bad news is that while México will see all of the matches, those of us in the US will struggle, with just five of the eight legally available.
Game of the Week
Cruz Azul and Pumas should be the best of the bunch this week. Available (legally!) in both the US and Mexico, these two historic rivals are coming off of good wins and look hungry to show that the bad old days are behind them. Pumas is finally scoring goals with four players tallying in the win over Atlas, and perhaps most importantly the goals are coming from players other than Desirée Monsiváis, who has seen limited action in the two games this season. This is good because she hasn’t been a full 90 starter for a year now, and this will hopefully keep her fresh and healthy down the stretch.
Cruz Azul meanwhile went to Pachuca and really took it to Tuzas last week and while Pachuca certainly missed Jenni Hermoso, La Máquina was able to keep Charlyn Corral, Viri Salazar, and Alice Soto off the board for 90 minutes. Norma Palafox looked great in the game, scoring a goal and menacing the Pachuca back line. Meghan Cavanaugh also looks to be one of the signings of the off-season, providing Cruz Azul with another dimension in the attack. Érica Gomes also scored her first goal in the win in just her second game with Cruz Azul.
Both of these teams have an energy about them that is contagious. Hopefully this is an inflection point for two of México’s historic teams to really prove they’re committed to the projects they have in place.
