Liga MX Femenil Power Rankings - Preseason

A somewhat arbitrary ranking of how Liga MX Femenil teams are doing (or in this case, will do) this season.

This season I’m going to do Power Rankings for the teams, which will give some insight into where I think teams are in terms of how good they are versus how good their record is. It’s totally subjective and should in no way be taken too seriously. After each little blurb will be an icon to denote whether or not they went up in ranking (⬆️), went down in ranking (⬇️), or stayed the same (➖). Since it’s the first week, everyone is ➖

And please feel free to let me know where you think teams should be in the power rankings.

Thank you for reading Golazo del Gringo! If you enjoyed reading this post, please share it with anyone who enjoys women’s soccer.

1.) Tigres - They’re the defending champs that went out and got Jenni Hermoso and Thembi Kgatlana. Good luck, rest of the league! ➖

2.) Chivas - I think they’ve committed to stability, which goes a long way in a league that sometimes thrives on instability. ➖

3.) América - They lost some critical players from last season and I’ll need some convincing that it’s business as usual there. ➖

4.) FC Juárez - I’m really impressed with their project, and I think given some of the instability at some of the other clubs this could be a historic year for Las Bravalácticas. ➖

5.) Tijuana - Like Juárez, I really like what they’re building at Xolos Femenil. They made some really smart signings and are getting Esme Verdugo back from maternity. Don’t sleep on this team! ➖

6.) Rayadas - They’ve lost some critical players, and having a new technical staff will make things even more difficult for them this season. ➖

7.) Toluca - Another team that has been assembling a good team over the course of a few seasons. I’m not quite sure if they’re ready to make that leap quite yet to being a serious contender, but I think they’ll be in the mix for a Liguilla berth. ➖

8.) Pachuca - I think they’re still a good team, but they’ve had to fundamentally alter how they play soccer with so many critical players leaving. They’ve brought in some really good players like Fabiola Ibarra and Chinwendu Ihezuo, and how quickly they can get integrated into the squad will largely determine how the season goes for Las Tuzas. ➖

9.) León - León’s thing lately has been to be good but not too good, and unfortunately I think they’re still good but not too good.

10.) Atlas - I think Atlas is forging a new path for themselves and with a little luck could make a run for a Liguilla berth, especially if stronger teams falter. Still they might need a few seasons to really get things going. ➖

11.) Querétaro - I want them to pick and identity and stick with it for a few seasons and build upon that. I think if they can do that then the project can really make a name for itself, otherwise it’ll be more of the same. ➖

12.) San Luis - It’s a rebuild after the Fernando Samayoa era ended. They’ve got a decent nucleus of players to build around, but when will we finally see the full might of Atlético Madrid on display here? ➖

13.) Cruz Azul - I’m still unconvinced by Cruz Azul. They lost some really good players, and there are some new faces in some pretty key positions both on and off of the pitch. Even if the front office and technical staff changes work out in the long run, the first season is always a bit of a crapshoot. ➖

14.) Pumas - Another team with a new coach, however while other teams brought in players to fill vacancies, Pumas really hasn’t. I’m going to need to be convinced. ➖

15.) Santos Laguna - There was nowhere to go but up for Las Guerreras. I think they’ll be better than last season, and I’m excited to see what Karla Maya can do in Torreón, but it’s another situation of a new coach coming into a team that needs a lot of help.

16.) Puebla - Puebla is always hit-or-miss, and I wouldn’t be surprised if they catch a team or two by surprise and get some points. Still, this is a long-term project that’s going to need a lot of help, and it might be tough sledding for a bit until they get things stabilized. ➖

17.) Mazatlán - Every season I see who Mazatlán has brought in during the offseason and think “Hey this is going to be the year they pull it all together!” You’re not fooling me so easily this time, Cañonera. ➖

18.) Necaxa - This poor club has been through a lot and I just hope this season is one where the players are protected and everyone is treated with dignity and respect. ➖
