Liga MX Femenil Power Rankings - 2024 Clausura, Week 7

A somewhat arbitrary ranking of how Liga MX Femenil teams are doing this season.

This past week saw a bunch of really lopsided score lines, which while helpful in sorting out the haves- and the have-nots is also a stark reminder that there are haves- and have-nots in the league and that the gulf between these sides is as wide as ever. Hopefully the have-nots see just how far behind the haves they are and up their investments and re-commit to putting forth the effort and resources to close that gap. If they don’t, then hopefully the league and/or the federation steps in to compel them to.

Thank you for reading Golazo del Gringo! If you enjoyed reading this post, please share it with anyone who enjoys women’s soccer.

.) Tigres - Two weeks ago they didn’t have their best performance and eked out a win against a poor Cruz Azul side. This past week the absolutely obliterated a good Toluca side 7-0 (and it should have been 8-0 with a Thembi Kgatlana goal wrongly called offside). Struggling to think of any side that can hang with this sort of onslaught when they’re on their A game. ➖

.) América - A 5-1 win on the road against Querétaro is a good result for this team. They’ll face Mazatlán this week before the international break, and have some stern tests coming afterwards, but América is about where we thought they’d be at this point of the season. ➖

.) Rayadas - While they’ve looked shaky at times this season, Rayadas are still in the thick of things. They got a scrappy win against a Pumas side looking to show they’re not to be taken lightly and are going into the international break in third place. They host Santos when they return from break before going to León and then hosting archrival Tigres, which will tell us all we need to know about this team. ⬆️

.) Chivas - Licha Cervantes became the first player in league history to score six goals in one game, tying Stefany Mayor for the goal scoring lead in a 10-2 pummeling of Santos. The big caveat is that this historic performance was against Santos, but it was a historic performance nonetheless. ⬆️

.) León - I’ve been underestimating this team all season long apparently. They beat a tough Pachuca side and are a point behind Chivas (and Pachuca too) on the table, so up the power rankings they go. There’s still a lot of season left, but I think there are a lot of teams who aren’t looking forward to playing La Fiera anymore. ⬆️

.) FC Juárez - Juárez keeps on getting wins against teams they need to beat. Mazatlán has been improving all season and even took a 2-0 lead before Juárez came back in the second half to win it. These are the sorts of wins that teams can hang their hats on later in the season if they’re down a goal. ⬆️

.) Pachuca - If Pachuca wants to be taken seriously, they need to beat teams like León. Not because León are bad (they’re not!) mind you, but because Pachuca are (ostensibly) good. ⬇️

.) Puebla - Puebla did well to beat Necaxa at home, which is not something I thought I’d be saying this season. It’s wild to think that heading into the international break they’re in position to make the Liguilla, but it’s good to see the team turn things around so drastically. ⬆️

.) Tijuana - Tijuana with a statement win against Atlas. While Atlas isn’t the Atlas of old, a 4-0 win on the road is an accomplishment. It still remains to be seen what the ceiling is for this team, which should give the Xolos Femenil faithful hope. ⬆️

.) Pumas - Pumas gave Monterrey as much as they could handle and then some. I still feel like this team is improving every match despite taking a couple of tough losses on the chin over the past few weeks. They’ve got a stretch of very winnable games coming up, so they could be a team on the rise after the international break. ⬆️

.) Toluca - Going into the match, Toluca might have been a dark horse to steal a point at home against Tigres. I don’t think anyone saw the 7-0 disasterclass coming, however. Toluca was thoroughly outplayed by Tigres, and if that wasn’t bad enough, they’ll host América on the other side of the international break. Yikes. ⬇️

.) Necaxa - Losing 1-0 to Puebla on the road isn’t the worst result for a team that is still trying to point themselves in the right direction. I think Necaxa will get there despite some of the recent setbacks they’ve faced. ⬆️

.) Mazatlán - Las Cañoneras had Juárez in the first half but fell apart in the second to pick up the loss. It’s things like this, the inability to finish out a game even when spotted a two-goal lead, that keeps Mazatlán at the bottom of the table. If they can find a way to move past these sorts of gaffes, they’ll be a decent team. ⬆️

.) Atlas - Tijuana has been struggling lately, so getting blown out 4-0 in their own building is about an accurate of a representation of where this team is at this moment that you could get. If that wasn’t bad enough, Atlas has a tough string of games coming up, facing six of the eight teams currently in Liguilla spots before the end of the season. ⬇️

.) Cruz Azul - Cruz Azul got a win! On the road! This team is quite simply too good to be as bad as it’s been this season, so to see them get a win is refreshing. Of course there’s a long way to go until they get back to respectability, but they’ve taken a good first step on that journey. ⬆️

.) Querétaro - I keep thinking Querétaro is going to turn a page and they just simply don’t. A loss to América isn’t unexpected, but a 5-1 loss at home reinforces how much work there is to do with this team. ⬇️

.) San Luis - San Luis is lucky Santos lost so badly to Chivas, or else they’d be at the bottom because that’s what usually happens when you lose to the worst team in the league to become the worst team in the league on points. ➖

.) Santos Laguna - A 10-2 thrashing by Chivas may not be the worst loss in league history, but it’s definitely a sign of just how far and how fast this team has fallen. Santos could be so much more than what they’ve been reduced to. ⬇️
