Liga MX Femenil Power Rankings - 2024 Clausura, Week 6

A somewhat arbitrary ranking of how Liga MX Femenil teams are doing this season.

Thank you for reading Golazo del Gringo! If you enjoyed reading this post, please share it with anyone who enjoys women’s soccer.

.) Tigres - Not their best performance but a win is a win. They went down early on a soft penalty and had to battle back from a deficit for the first time this season. Alison González’ brace proves that Tigres can win if even if Fany Mayor and Jacquie Ovalle don’t score. ➖

.) América - This team has been coming together well over the course of the season, and their 4-0 pasting of Rayadas is proof they should be considered among the elite teams in the league. I want to see more consistency from them, especially when playing teams lower on the table, but such a dominant win over an opponent like Rayadas speaks volumes about the ceiling of this team. ⬆️

.) Pachuca - Pachuca gritted through a 2-1 win on the road against Pumas, with Charlyn Corral putting the team on her back once again and willing them to victory. Once this team finds a way to get more goals from Ihezuo, Ibarra, and Usme, they could be a problem. ⬆️

.) Rayadas - It’s not so much that Rayadas lost to América, it’s how they lost that is worrisome. A few moments aside, they were so thoroughly outplayed that I had to check to make sure they still had eleven players on the pitch. The team is quickly getting a reputation for shrinking in big games. ⬇️

.) Chivas - Much like Tigres, Chivas didn’t have their best outing but still managed to get a win on the road, downing Querétaro 2-1. Fans are still legitimately worried about whether or not this team can compete with the teams above them, which they’ll need to in order to live up to the club’s stated ambitions. ⬆️

.) FC Juárez - Juárez is right about where I thought they’d be. They can’t be taken lightly by anyone and if they can pull things together they could cause problems for the teams above them that are faltering. ⬇️

.) León - León meanwhile is nowhere near where I thought they’d be. Sitting in seventh place on the table and looking good against strong teams, they got a win against América two weeks ago and held Juárez to a draw this week. Maybe they are who we thought Necaxa would be? ⬆️

.) Toluca - A draw on the road against Necaxa isn’t inspiring a lot of confidence, despite Necaxa being a bit of a revelation. Toluca are sixth on the table but I would have sworn they were lower, and since this ranking system is partially based on vibes, I’m putting them where I think they belong. ⬇️

.) Puebla - Don’t look now, but Puebla haven’t lost in three games including matches against Chivas and Xolos Femenil, both of which they drew 1-1. I still think Puebla could eke into a Liguilla spot, especially if they can keep up this good run of form. ➖

.) Tijuana - Tijuana is who they are. They’ve beaten teams like Mazatlán and San Luis, drew Puebla, and lost Chivas, América, and Tigres. The good news is that they have enough games left against teams they should get points from that they’ll be in the Liguilla hunt, but the bad news is that I’m not convinced they’ll make it. ⬇️

.) Pumas - A 2-1 loss at home to Pachuca isn’t great, and Pumas didn’t look their best against them but I’m seeing a team coming together that can hang with the bigger teams in the league. They now need to turn that into actual points on the table. ⬆️

.) Atlas - Drawing Santos isn’t a great result, though I will give them merit points for doing it in Torreón. Atlas is rebuilding, but the rebuilding project has gone on for several seasons now and fans are well justified in starting to sour on the project as a whole. ⬆️

.) Necaxa - Las Necaxalácticas shut out a Toluca team that just got done blowing out Mazatlán 6-0. Of course Necaxa didn’t score either, but a scoreless draw against one of the hottest teams in the league is a good result. ⬇️

.) Mazatlán - Mazatlán is looking down the barrel of a tough stretch of games, but the attacking front of Soumaya Bouak, and Hildah Magaia looked good in the win over San Luis. Losing Sinoxolo Cesane to a meniscus tear will hurt, but if these three are healthy and on the same page they could be a problem for a lot of clubs. ⬆️

.) Querétaro - I thought Querétaro had a real chance to make a statement against a struggling Chivas and they just… didn’t. They took a lead and then let in two goals late. I still think there’s something there though, but time is starting to run out for them to prove it. ⬇️

.) Santos Laguna - Santos will take all of the positive momentum they can get, and a scoreless draw at home against Atlas is a positive result for this beleaguered team. They’ve got some tough games coming down the pike but some winnable ones as well, but I think this season is all about building the foundation for Karla Maya to succeed upon. ➖

.) San Luis - San Luis simply has to start beating the bottom teams in the league if they’re going to rise up the rankings. Yes it was a road game and yes Mazatlán is starting to coalesce into a team that looks like it has purpose, but it’s Mazatlán. Maybe next season will be the one where Atlético Madrid . ⬇️

.) Cruz Azul - They had Tigres down a goal for the first time all season but couldn’t hold onto the lead. Maybe another time this would have been seen them rise up the rankings, but it’s hard to reward the team for the season they’ve been having. ➖
