Liga MX Femenil Power Rankings - 2024 Clausura, Week 2
A somewhat arbitrary ranking of how Liga MX Femenil teams are doing this season.
Tigres is back on top of the League standings and our power rankings, but beyond that there was a lot of movement. I’m still riding the hype train for Necaxa, who are unbeaten and remain in fourth place on the league table, and and enjoying seeing teams that were once synonymous with failure pulling out good results. Liga MX Femenil is many things, but boring and predictable isn’t one of them. Long may chaos reign.
Thank you for reading Golazo del Gringo! If you enjoyed reading this post, please share it with anyone who enjoys women’s soccer.
.) Tigres - The only perfect team remaining, Tigres turned it on against a Pumas side that showed up but were completely outmatched. Jenni Hermoso had two assists in her debut, and Thembi Kgatlana got her first two goals in Liga MX play. This team is going to be a juggernaut, and I’m not sure if anyone can stop them - in México or otherwise. ➖
.) FC Juárez - It’s not so much that they beat Chivas that sees Las Bravalácticas shoot up the rankings, it’s how they went about it. I can’t remember seeing Chivas so thoroughly bullied on the pitch. Juárez pushed them around and really caused them fits. I think this team is the real deal. ⬆️
.) Rayadas - I still have a lot of reservations about this team, but coming back from down two goals on the road against Pachuca takes guts. If they can pull it all together this team could be a contender. ⬆️
.) Pachuca - A draw against Rayadas isn’t bad, but blowing a two goal lead in the second half is. Much like Rayadas, there’s a lot of quality on this team but there’s also a lot of questions around if they can pull it all together in a meaningful way this season. I think they’ll be fine. ⬇️
.) Tijuana - Their 4-1 whoopin’ of Mazatlán is about what we would expect. I think Tijuana is a good team and want to see them tested against tougher opposition. Luckily for me they’re going to play at América for their midweek game this week. ➖
.) Necaxa - There is something different about this team this season. They beat Cruz Azul in Week 1 and the narrative was about them beating a bad team to get their first ever opening day win. Now they drew América and came back to do it. While it’s too early to talk Liguilla, it isn’t too early to say that Las Centellas aren’t a doormat anymore and teams are going to have to work against them to get a result. ⬆️
.) Toluca - They should have done much better than they did against Atlas on the road, but the late penalty they conceded was what did them in more than poor play. It’s perhaps a bit harsh that they fell a spot in the rankings, but Necaxa’s run of form is too good to ignore. ⬇️
.) América - Perhaps it’s unfair to in one sentence say Necaxa has changed and should be taken seriously and in another complain that América couldn’t finish the job against them, but América is too talented of a team to be drawing Necaxa no matter how much they former has improved. This simply can’t happen for a team this good. ⬇️
.) Chivas - Seeing Chivas pushed around like they were has me kind of shook, and I’m not even a fan. I think other teams will be able to take a lot from this performance and draw up a blueprint on how to beat them, meaning Chivas will have their work cut out for themselves to try and stay ahead of teams that will come in and try and push them around through sheer physicality (which isn’t really how Juárez was able to succeed). ⬇️
.) Querétaro - They held San Luis to a draw on the road, which is always a nightmare for teams to come in and try and play. They’ll host the surging Puebla during the midweek, which should be a rather strong test. ⬆️
.) Puebla - Another team that has been a doormat for so long that has seemingly turned their fortunes around this season. They pulled it together after the first half and beat a decent León team. We’ll see how they do as the season goes on. ⬆️
.) San Luis - They had Querétaro right where they wanted them and kind of let them off the hook. They have to be better, especially at home in front of that crowd. ➖
.) León - Not a good look losing to Puebla, especially after taking the lead into the half. Still Estadio Cuauhtémoc is a tough venue to play in and I do think León will rebound from this, although they havea nightmarish few weeks coming up with games against Tigres, América, Juárez, Pachuca, and Chivas all in a row. ⬇️
.) Atlas - They got a good result against a strong Toluca team but perhaps got a bit lucky with the late handball that conceded the penalty. Still in a season I had thought would be a write-off for Atlas, they’re able to put together some things that they can use as building blocks for the future. ⬇️
.) Cruz Azul - A shutout draw on the road is a good thing, right? Well yes, but it was against Santos. ⬆️
.) Santos Laguna - A shutout draw at home is a good thing, right? Well yes, but it was against Cruz Azul. ⬆️
.) Pumas - They were throttled 5-1 by Tigres at home, but they looked decent for most of the first half. Stefany Mayor’s goal heading into first half stoppage was their undoing, but there’s one positive for Pumas from this match: this is the last they’ll see of Tigres this season. ⬇️
.) Mazatlán - Soumaya Bouak hit a wondergoal in the fifth minute for Las Cañoneras, and it was all downhill from there as they lost 4-1 to Tijuana at the Mictlán. Bouak’s moment of brilliance however can’t be understated, and knowing that the Algerian National Team player is able to create goals like that could give Mazatlán something to build upon for the upcoming season. ⬇️
