Liga MX Femenil Power Rankings - 2024 Clausura, Week 4
A somewhat arbitrary ranking of how Liga MX Femenil teams are doing this season.
This was one of those weeks that gave us answers about some clubs but raises a lot more about others. Some teams are looking like a lock to make the Liguilla despite it not being even a full 1/3 of the way into the season, while others stand on the precipice of free-fall into the abyss.
There’s still a lot of soccer left to play however, and it seems like every team has a stretch against the top teams in the league where they’ll need to run the gauntlet and see how they look coming out the other side.
Thank you for reading Golazo del Gringo! If you enjoyed reading this post, please share it with anyone who enjoys women’s soccer.
1.) Tigres - Not quite sure what else to say about Tigres, except that now they’ve got Thembi Kgatlana and Jenni Hermoso scoring goals to compliment league-leading goal scorer Stefany Mayor. Oh, and Jacquie Ovalle broke her scoreless streak of almost 1400 minutes with a brace against León. ➖
2.) Rayadas - Rayadas went to Querétaro and put up three on them, which is no small feat. They’ve been benefitting from a rather easy schedule, but have done well in all of their games save for the opener against Puebla. After hosting Cruz Azul this week, they’ve got back-to-back away games against América and Pumas before hosting Toluca, so we’ll see how they far against tougher opponents. ⬆️
3.) América - América easily beat Santos 5-0, which is about what we’d expect from a team in the top three against the team at the bottom. You can only beat the team you have in front of you, and they’ve been doing just that. ⬆️
4.) Pachuca - A solid 4-0 win against Necaxa on the road will help right a shaky season. They’ll need to amass as many points as possible before ending the season with games against Chivas, at Tijuana and América, and finishing at home against Tigres. ⬆️
5.) FC Juárez - Not a good result at all against Pumas. Thankfully for Las Bravalácticas, they have some easy games coming up against Santos, León, Mazatlán, Atlas, and Cruz Azul. They’ll need to get points during this stretch if they’re going to be able to get a home series during the Liguilla ⬇️
6.) Chivas - They got a 1-1 draw at home against a very good Toluca team, but should I be worried that a team with that much attacking firepower only managed one goal? ➖
7.) Toluca - A draw on the road against Chivas is a much better tresult than their draw at home against Pumas. Holding that lineup to just one goal is an accomplishment too. This team is proving a lot of doubters wrong so far, and it’s fun to watch them play. ➖
8.) Tijuana - They picked up a gutsy 3-2 win over San Luis. Mariana Munguía’s game winner at the death is one of those things that teams can use to boost their belief throughout the season. This is a good team, and I think they’re only going to get stronger as the season goes along. ➖
9.) Puebla - Who is this team? The match after a loss at home against Querétaro, they blow out Cruz Azul 4-0 at La Noria like one of the grandes and sit in seventh place on the table. If they can do this on a consistent basis, they could be a sleeper pick to eke into the Liguilla. ⬆️
10.) Querétaro - Last time around I said I wanted to see Querétaro play stiffer competition, and I got my wish. A 3-0 loss at home to a surging Rayadas isn’t great, but it shouldn’t define who they are. We’ll see how they bounce back on the road against Pachuca. ⬇️
11.) León - Nothing good about the 7-2 loss to Tigres other then perhaps the silver lining that they were able to score two goals, more than any other team so far this season against that juggernaut. They’re in the midst of a brutal stretch, but are still somehow in the Liguilla hunt, sitting in eighth place on the table. We’ll see how they finish, but for now it’s not looking too bad for La Fiera. ⬇️
12.) Pumas - They managed to pull off a win against Juárez, which is pretty impressive! I do however want to see more in the way of consistency from Pumas before I’m ready to back them for a Liguilla fight. ⬆️
13.) San Luis - Letting a last minute equalizer like that against Tijuana was brutal, but they did well to come as close as they did to getting a point in one of the toughest places to play in México. Now they have a string of easier games, facing Mazatlán, Cruz Azul, Santos, and León in the next four matches. If they get a good run of form going from this, who knows what they can accomplish. ⬇️
14.) Atlas - Atlas did what they needed to do against Mazatlán. I’m not thoroughly convinced they’re going to be doing much beyond rebuilding this season, so take the wins when and where you can get them. ⬆️
15.) Necaxa - A second straight week sees Las Necaxalácticas drop down the rankings. It was against Pachuca, so hopefully the next couple of matches against Atlas and Toluca allow Necaxa to get some positive results. ⬇️
16.) Mazatlán - They had a real shot at a win against Atlas at home and just couldn’t get it done. It’s tough to see where they could get points over the next few weeks too, with games against Toluca and San Luis coming up before a four game run against Juárez, América, Tigres, and Chivas.⬇️
17.) Santos Laguna - Another heavy defeat, this time a 5-0 shellacking by América. Like I said last week, this season may just be about Karla Maya figuring out what works and what doesn’t and implementing a long-term strategy, because this season looks bleak. ➖
18.) Cruz Azul - This team is in freefall and could be poised to set some pretty unenviable records. ➖
