Happy Pride Month! It’s safe to say that literally everything would not look the same without the contributions of LGBTQ+ people, least of all women’s soccer. And one of the best things I’ve noticed about women’s soccer is that it is a welcoming space for all people, especially here in the United States.
At every match in the United States that I can remember seeing, there have been rainbow flags, trans flags, and people just being themselves on and off of the pitch. This past weekend, there were also several tifo displays celebrating Pride. These displays are powerful statements, especially in states that are trying to legislate LGBTQ+ people out of existence.
Something else that is powerful is official team accounts and the league account spreading these messages for everyone to see. In the face of daily atrocities, it’s good to know that there are a lot of people who have the backs of our LGBTQ+ siblings.
And it’s not just in the United States. Out footballers and fans are commonplace in México. In 2022, Rayadas players helped a fan propose to her girlfriend by unveiling a banner.
And in Argentina, Mara Gómez has been blazing trails ever since becoming the first out transgender player to play in the Argentine Primera División in 2020 with Villa San Carlos. Gómez currently plays for Quilmes Atlético in the third division in Argentina.
And earlier this year Minnesota Aurora in the United States signed trans man Isaac Ranson, a former standout goalkeeper with Cal State Fullerton, to a contract.
It can be disheartening to see a sad, scared minority of hateful little people doing their utmost to make people’s lives miserable, but take heart that there are more good and decent people out there who will stand up to the bigots and do the one thing that they can’t stand: be happy. Being happy with yourself as you are and being happy with other people as they are, these are revolutionary acts in these dark times.

A bit late seeing this, but Atlas Femenil U19 head coach Mirelle Arciniega became a mother again recently. Congratulations to her and her family, and welcome to the world baby Ivanna!
Eva Espejo has left Rayadas to become the head coach of the Ecuador Women’s National team. She is joined by former Juárez Femenil head coach Ana Cristina “Tity” González, who will serve as her assistant. Ecuador have two games remaining in the 2025-26 CONMEBOL Women’s Nations League tournament and sit two points behind Chile to make the playoffs for the 2027 Women’s World Cup. They face Chile on June 5 and Argentina on June 9.
