What a week for Club América.

On Sunday they vanquished Rayadas to win the Liga MX Femenil title, erasing a 1-0 deficit from the away leg to win 3-1. They not only broke a streak of losing in four of the last five Finals series but also avenged their loss in penalties in the 2024 Clausura tournament to Rayadas. They then went about an hour and a half north of the city to Pachuca where they then bullied a good Gotham squad 4-1 on Wednesday. Gotham looked like a team that had traveled coast-to-coast across the entire continent before heading to a different country and playing a match at 8,000 feet above sea level, and América showed them no mercy.

On Saturday, they participated in an absolute all-timer of a Final against the Washington Spirit. América was up 2-1 going into the half, but both teams had really fought hard to get to get there. Each team had shots that required a great save from the goalkeeper or a fortunate intervention by the crossbar to prevent the score from looking more like one you’d see at an SEC (American) football game. Washington equalized almost immediately after the start of the second half and momentarily pulled ahead 3-2 on Rose Kouassi’s second of the evening before América got goals from Geyse, Irene, and a goal deep in stoppage that was charged as an own goal to prevail 5-3. And just like that, América won the double within a week.

Here’s the highlights video from Concacaf, but if you can find the whole match, I urge you to go and watch it if you missed it live. And hell, if you watched it live and want to re-watch it, I wouldn’t blame you.

It’s hard for me to put into words what this win means for Mexican women’s soccer.

This is a league that will begin its tenth year later this summer. A league whose existence is owed to a hairdresser whose murder remains unsolved to this day. It has had to fight and claw for respect from press both foreign and domestic, for respect from other leagues around the world, and even for respect from some of the clubs that actually run the teams. La liga exotica, it was called. The exotic league. In it were players doing what few others could do in front of thousands of fans while also being routinely ignored in transfer windows.

Slowly it began to change. World class players came to play. Jenni Hermoso joined Pachuca, and more eyes than ever got on the league. She won the World Cup while playing for Tuzas. Mia Fishel opted to play for Tigres instead of going to Orlando. Rebeca Bernal signed with the Washington Spirit, then Jacquie Ovalle shattered the transfer record going from Tigres to Orlando. Liga MX Femenil became, to borrow a phrase from Don Garber (I’m really sorry y’all), a “league of choice” for a lot of players internationally. It really wasn’t that long ago that this was a pipe dream.

And now, la liga exotica is the most watched women’s soccer league in the world and one of its teams are CONCACAF champions.
