Fútnotes, Volume 52

All the news that's fit to print, and then some...

I can’t believe it’s been a year since I started doing Fútnotes. Finding and amplifying stories from around the world that focus on women’s soccer is affirming and brings me joy, and I hope that you get the same sense of affirmation and joy.

I do have a bit of news to share: this will be my last week doing this on Substack. I am planning to migrate this to beehiiv because of Substack’s refusal to ban Nazis from posting on the platform. While Substack might not even notice my tiny little blog has left, I refuse to share a space with Nazis and their enablers.

So everything should move over seamlessly and you won’t even notice a difference. If you have concerns about moving your email address to beehiiv, please let me know by Saturday, January 27 via email to [email protected] and I’ll make accommodations.

I also have another little bit of news: After ~12 years I am no longer writing for SB Nation. I will always have a place in my heart for SB Nation for the chance it took on an unproven writer who wanted to write about soccer and allowed him to grow. It was my choice to leave, and I’ve got a few more things coming up in the near future. I wish my former colleagues nothing but success.

That’s it, for now. On with the news news.

Rest of the World

Happy first anniversary to Brown Girl Sport, a community focused on the South Asian experience in women’s sports. Here’s to many, many more.

FIFA is apparently looking to start a Women’s Club World Cup in 2026. This probably should have been going for the past 5-10 years but better late than never I suppose. (The Athletic, possible paywall)

The Women’s Cup was announced this past week. A four team tournament featuring América de Cali and Deportivo Cali from Colombia and NY/NJ GOtham FC and Racing Louisville FC from the NWSL will take place starting on February 27 in Cali, Colombia. (The Women’s Cup via Twitter/X)

Sam Mewis retired from soccer at 31.

Finally, Marta won the FIFA Special Award for “outstanding career achievement”. There’s never been a player that has meant so much to the sport on so many different levels, and I doubt there ever will be again. FIFA blocks this content from being reposted and embedded, but please click and watch A Rainha’s entire speech. It’s well worth your time. (FIFA via YouTube)

Don’t ever let them tell you no one pays attention to women’s soccer.
