Fútnotes, Volume 38

All the news that's fit to print, and then some...

There’s a lot going on in the world right now, and at times it kinda seems silly to devote energy into sports. Sports however provide not only an escape from constantly focusing on heavier things, but also serve to remind us of our shared humanity.

Something I’ve always tried to do in my writings, and especially this particular column, is to provide coverage that shows that commonality. Of course this column is not without its inherent biases (it does not feature men’s soccer, and news is primarily from sources in languages I speak), but I also try and focus on the game in places all around the world and in a way that shows the same respect across the board.

My sincerest wish is that this column in its own small way reminds anyone who reads it to show that same respect to the common dignity and value of everyone.

México

Desirée Monsiváis reclaimed her goalscoring lead, scoring a hat trick in Pumas 3-0 win over Necaxa. Monsiváis’ 129 goals leads Katty Martínez by two - for now. (Pumas)

Speaking of Hermoso, Thomas Graham wrote an excellent article for The Guardian that looks at what Hermoso’s arrival in México has - and has not - brought to the league. I definitely recommend subscribing to their Moving the Goalposts newsletter if you haven’t already.

Licha Cervantes scored her 100th goal with Chivas, bringing her up to 122 goals all time throughout her career. To celebrate, she cut a hole in the net at Estadio Akron.

Speaking of Chivas, I enjoy these tactical breakdowns they do after games. It strikes a good balance, not too high-level but not too far into nerdery. (Chivas)

Rest of the World

Congratulations to the San Diego Wave, bringing the NWSL Shield to America’s Finest City.

The Quarterfinals of the Copa Libertadores Femenina are set, with Brazil’s Palmeiras facing off against Atlético Nacional from Colombia and Corinthians and Internacional in the other, all-Brazil bracket.

Don’t ever let them tell you no one pays attention to women’s soccer.
