All the news that's fit to print, and then some...
The newsletter World Cup is upon us.
Thanks to the slow death of Twitter and the fractured media landscape being ever more tenuous and unstable, this World Cup I’ve been relying on newsletters to fill in the information gaps. My thirst for the information hasn’t waned, I’ve just needed to adapt how I quench it.
Newsletters have a lot of positives. As a consumer, I can sign up to ones that fit my interests, no matter how eccentric. It also allows me to pay the creator for their content directly, which is always better than funneling it through an institution or having ads. As a creator, it gives me pretty much unfettered control on my content; everything from subject matter to frequency is up to me. I get to write about what I want, when I want (although to be honest, it’s more like “when I’m able to”)
There are downsides too though. For creators, it can be daunting to have to do everything for yourself without the aid of an editor, graphic designer/photographer, etc. Also organizations aren’t always willing to give small outlets the time of day, and if you’re freelancing by yourself that number shrinks even further. For my recent ACL series I reached out to every club in the NWSL and Liga MX. Only four responded. C’est la vie.
It can also be tough for consumers as well, because the more you sign up for the more you get. Some outlets publish multiple times a day, filling my inbox faster than I can keep up.
I wish I knew of a better way of doing things, but it is what it is at this point. Support as many creators as you can. I recommend several in my aptly-titled “Recommendations” section that I hope you’ll find as enjoyable as I do. Also I hope a column like Fútnotes helps solve some of these problems: in one email you get a wide selection of news articles about a single subject. I hope you find it valuable as information, entertainment, or both.
