All the news that's fit to print, and then some...
The ongoing saga of the person who cyberstalked Scarlett Camberos and other members of Club América Femenil took a dramatic turn this week. First, Club América put out a statement identifying the person complete with photos after repeated requests to the authorities went unheeded. The Fiscalía General de Justicia (FGJ, or Attorney General) in Mexico City responded that they were waiting to file charges, but then it was reported by Récord that the FGJ had already filed charges on June 30 after four América players had filed reports with the office.
Renata Masciarelli then took to TikTok to detail how she got the person’s location and incriminating evidence.
El Universal did a good write-up about it, but in summary the stalker messaged Masciarelli last year and talked about Camberos (who she does not name in the video). Masciarelli had a raffle and noticed a ton of tickets were bought by a person, and she mistakenly shared her phone number with the stalker, who began messaging her, claiming to be a different person. Masciarelli realized she had his phone number and asked the stalker where to send his raffle winnings, when he sent her Camberos’ address along with photos of him inside the apartment. This was proof that he violated a restraining order, which she sent to the FGJ.
Récord then reported yesterday that an arrest warrant was filed for the stalker who will be sent to a prison in Nuevo León to await trial when apprehended.
There’s a lot to unpack there, and while I am very cognizant that I am an American a.) pointing out flaws in another country’s legal processes (especially one where the US has historically done a lot of meddling) and b.) the overly militarized police feeding the carceral state in the United States, I can’t help but hope that México toughens its laws on cyberstalking, cyberharassment, and gendered violence. The initial incident with Camberos was in February, and the accused was only able to be held for 36 hours at that time. It’s far too little, especially considering most people who face these sorts of things don’t have the backing of an institution like Club América to help bring attention to their case.
Hopefully all of the players will be able to sleep a little better knowing this person won’t be able to harass them, although the damage is likely done.

From last week, but it’s such a good article I’m including it anyway. Jason Anderson does a great write-up about why Pride celebrations are so important, using the Washington Spirit’s shift from refusing to acknowledge Pride to embracing it whole-heartedly to show how it resonates with fans. Brilliant stuff. (Pro Soccer Wire)
Don’t ever let them tell you no one pays attention to women’s soccer.
