Fútnotes, Volume 14

All the news that's fit to print, and then some...

The match between the Houston Dash and North Carolina Courage was abandoned, with the Courage being awarded a 1-0 win. (NWSL) The scoreline isn’t controversial - the Courage were leading 1-0 when the game was stopped in around the 51st minute when severe weather in the Houston area forced the stoppage. The teams however waited over two hours in the dressing rooms before the game was officially called, and the NWSL rulebook wasn’t very specific about the protocol for stopping a match.

I checked the Liga MX Femenil rulebook, which is really clear about what would happen. In Article 59 it states that in the event of “force majeure, state of emergency, aggression from the public toward the referees, players, or coaches of the participating clubs, or lack of electricity”: any game with more than seven minutes remaining has to be completed within 48 hours. If it can’t be for some reason, the league president will decide when it should be made up.

It probably helps that most of the league’s rulebook was cribbed from the varonil rulebook, but it’s certainly something to consider going forward for both leagues. Liga MX Femenil should look to expand the list of events that could cause a postponement of play including inclement weather or at minimum add “etcétera” to the end of the above list. The NWSL (and all leagues, frankly) meanwhile should take a look at other league rulebooks for potential blind spots in theirs to be fixed.

A good friend of mine Theo-Lloyd Hughes interviewed Toluca goalkeeper Kayla Thompson about her journey through soccer. Carve out some time and give this one a listen.

América winger Sarah Luebbert was photographed in a boot ahead of América’s match against Querétaro at Estadio Azteca. Luebbert hasn’t played since picking up a sprained ankle against Tigres in Week 10. (Juan Carlos Monroy, photo by Daniela Cuanalo)

Aylin “La Joya” Aviléz made her 150th appearance in Liga MX Femenil in Rayadas’ win over Tijuana. Just shy of her 20th birthday, Aviléz scored in her first ever match at just 15 years old and has gone on to amass 52 goals (so far) in her career.

The league did a feature interview with Jasmine Casarez (in English) about her time with Juárez.

Portland Thorns’ goalkeeper Bella Bixby scored a stoppage time game-tying goal by backheeling it in. That sentence was a journey, but trust me the proof is in the video.

The upcoming Canadian professional women’s soccer league announced A.F.C. Toronto would join the Vancouver Whitecaps and Calgary Foothills as one of the founding member teams. (Project 8)
