Fútnotes, Volume 12
All the news that's fit to print, and then some...
Not a whole lot happening this past week since it was the international break, but there were some happenings.
México
FOX Sports’ Daniella López Guajardo made her debut calling play-by-play (PxP) for a men’s Liga MX match as Santos beat Rayados in Monterrey for the first time in over 20 years on Sunday evening. I interviewed López Guajardo last year for FMF State of Mind after she became one of the first women in México to call PxP for Liga MX Femenil games on FOX Sports in México and FOX Deportes in the United States. Rest of the World
A friendly between Kenya and Albania was cancelled when “logistical challenges (for the Kenyan team)… made it impossible to travel and arrive in Albania” in time to play the match. (Citizen Digital)
American Tifo wrote an article about an anti-gun violence banner created by Austin FC supporters in the wake of the mass murder of school children in Uvalde, Texas last year that was sent to Nashville in the wake of the mass murder there at a school to be displayed during an Nashville SC match.
The banner was then sent on to Louisville for display at Racing Louisville’s match after a mass murder there at a bank. It’s a heartbreaking read, but an important one that documents a phenomenon unique to the United States of communities coming together to grieve and heal after a mass murder. (American Tifo)
CBS launched the CBS Sports Golazo Network on Tuesday, April 11 “on CBS Sports platforms, Pluto TV and Paramount+ as a first-of-its-kind free, 24-hour direct-to-consumer digital network in the U.S.” and will include women’s soccer coverage as part of its repertoire. (CBS Sports)
Emily Lima was named head coach of the Perú Women’s National Team. Lima has previously coached Juventus, several clubs in Brazil including São Paulo and Santos as well as the Brazil and Ecuador Women’s National Teams. (Federación Peruana de Fútbol)
University of North Carolina alumni Courtnie Williamson’s Beyond Our Game organization and Brianna Pinto’s Pinto Futbol Foundation hosted a Fiversity Field Hockey & Soccer Clinic at UNC to help “provide access and resources to young girls and families of color and help minimize the various barriers to participation in sports.” (Daily Tar Heel)
One of my favorite images of the international break was the girls holding up a sign at the México vs. Houston game that said “Las niñas ya no quieren ser princesas, quieren ser futbolistas. (Girls don’t want to be princesses, they want to be footballers.)” (@Miseleccionfem)
Don’t ever let them tell you no one pays attention to women’s soccer.
